A graphic image of a man holding a lit up world globeData and algorithms are now part of our everyday lives and are established across society from banking and taxation, to agriculture and healthcare. It is how we use and manipulate data that is now the question, as well as how we navigate ethical considerations around artificial intelligence (AI) deployment.

Together with colleagues and experts from academia and public and private sector organisations, I will have the privilege of leading delivery of the first #ValidateAI conference. It will take place on 5 November 2019 at the Royal Society in London.

The focus of #ValidateAI

I’ve been working in this field for more than 20 years. What excites me most about the conference is bringing together the public, private and academic sectors to promote better collaboration and sharing of experiences, specifically on the validation of AI. Sector speakers will share their knowledge to inspire others who are nearer the start of their AI journey. We’ll be discussing what is “the art of the possible”, and how can we promote more rigour in validation of these systems?

We'll hear from leading speakers from organisations including The Alan Turing Institute, Oxford University and the Office for National Statistics. The debate will focus on producing AI solutions that are fit for purpose, safe and reliable, timely and trustworthy. We want to explore how such systems can depart from this ideal. And then examine tools and methods for ensuring sound and appropriate behaviour in a variety of different application domains, and looking at open challenges.

So why should you consider attending?

If you’re a policy maker and AI practitioner in industry, academia and government this conference will help you to:

  • Obtain industry-leading knowledge on deploying and maintaining AI systems to boost AI capability
  • Identify and adopt more robust and innovative AI validation and maintenance methodologies
  • Develop networks and collaborative partnerships across academia, government and industry
  • Boost new areas of academic research in AI maintenance methods.

I hope to see you there in what I'm sure will be a fascinating and thought-provoking day.
