Hi, my name is Byron Beard and I am the Head of Recruitment here in HMRC Digital. I manage the awesome team who have played a key role in transforming and leading the way for recruitment in HMRC and the wider Civil Service.
The team was created 18 months ago with a clear vision and purpose: to proactively source and hire the right technology talent to make HMRC’s IT solutions fit for purpose and ready for the future. This has been no small task. We proactively source, contact and speak to individuals about opportunities with HMRC providing a point of contact rather than just a recruitment portal.
We talk to people about the wider context and benefits to working in HMRC digital and the Civil Service. We’ve also worked with our managers and leaders to move away from assessing competencies, instead making hiring decisions based on the technical skills required which allows us to attract and hire the right people.
This has helped us to build a greater awareness of HMRC Digital, create an online presence and brand via LinkedIn and specialist boards meaning that individuals are now proactively contacting my team wanting to work for us. This is a major milestone for the team.
And it has helped us to successfully hire over 900 individuals within HMRC digital to date which is a great achievement!

Meet the Team
I have over 12 years' industry experience managing and providing operational expertise to organisations which allows for the attraction, development and retention of talented employees.
Laura has been in recruitment for over 5 years and accrued a wealth of experience within different sectors and industries. Previously working for a recruitment agency before moving into a career within the Civil Service for the first time in May 2017.
Pat joined HMRC in April 2017 and prior to that he worked as a recruiter for 4 years in both IT and Pharmaceuticals.
Ashley has worked in the Civil Service for 13 years, working in a variety of demanding roles in both HMRC and DWP. He joined the team in January 2017.
Megan joined the civil service in May 2017 as a recruitment researcher. So far she has been working on RCDTS* vacancies and has 3 years’experience in digital recruitment.
