Hi, my name’s Lisa Rowley and I’m the Development Programme Manager for the Talent and Development Team. I love my role in HMRC’s Digital Service. Together with my team, I recruit new apprentices and then support them throughout their apprenticeship from induction all the way through to graduation, and everything else in between!
HMRC’s Digital Service is totally committed to apprenticeship schemes. We’ve been running schemes for a couple of years now and the benefits to the apprentices themselves and us as a business are immense. The apprentices get to earn while they learn, they work on real projects and come out with real working skills and experience, as well as a qualification. We get people from all walks of life, younger and older, who bring with them fresh new ideas, different experiences and a real passion to achieve.
We offer several different apprenticeships schemes:
The Civil Service Fast Track Apprenticeship – this is a 2-year level 4 programme during which the student will work in the business on real projects alongside some of our best technologists. The programme includes the following broad areas:
- Business Administration
- Digital and Technology
- Project Delivery
Degree Apprenticeship schemes in Digital and Technology Solutions level 4 – 6
Cyber Security Apprenticeship Level 4
For colleagues in HMRC we also offer a range of ‘Mid career’ level 3- 6 Apprenticeships that suit anyone from early in their career right up to senior leaders, including:
- Leadership & Management
- Human Resources
- Digital & Technology
- Business Administration
Across HMRC’s IT and security functions we have a very exciting apprentice network, full of really talented, passionate people who are keen to learn and grow. They get to work on some pretty innovative projects like adding tax-related skills to home assistant devices like Amazon’s Echo, and on our social media webchat bots. The network is supported by a team of experienced technology professionals who have managed some of government’s biggest digital transformation projects.
We work closely with all of our learning providers to build relationships from day one to ensure the smooth running of all of our programmes. We also take part in national events, such as the Brathay Challenge (in 2016 our IT Apprentices came 2nd against 84 teams Nationwide) and national awards shows. Some of our apprentices have won awards, including some highly-recognised ones like BCS UK IT Awards IT Apprentice of the Year and WISE Rising Star. And a large number of them have gone on to promotion within HMRC after completion of their apprenticeship.
We’ve lined up a few blogs this week from our apprentices to try to give you an idea of what it’s really like to be an apprentice here in HMRC. And we'll be tweeting from various apprentice events on @HMRCdigital.
