Recently I spent an inspiring afternoon with The Prince's Trust, judging apps developed by 18 young people at the end of their week-long course in digital skills.
The Get Started programme is run by The Prince’s Trust and Capgemini, as part of a digital partnership which aims to give 600 young people a strong foundation in digital skills and help them prepare for jobs and training opportunities.
The five day taster course helps 16-25 year olds, who are not currently in work or education, find out what it might be like to work in digital. It is based around a challenge to design a digital app, and covers a range of topics and skills from brainstorming to market research, the Internet of Things to iBeacons, coding to analysis, and interpersonal skills like team working and presenting.
It was a privilege to attend the celebration event where the students had the daunting task of presenting their work to a panel of ‘dragons’, including myself, two executives from DWP and a Professor from Aston University. The event gave a real focus to the week and was a chance to support and encourage the young people.
It was great to see how far they had come in just one week and to hear their brilliant ideas - I was particularly impressed by ‘Acc.s’, an app aimed at helping people with mobility issues find public venues that cater for their needs, as I’m passionate about the importance of diversity within HMRC.
Other ideas included an app to capture music trends, an app to exchange e-business cards and another to help find lost pets. The day was a huge success and completing the course was a massive achievement for everyone involved.
The next event is planned for May where some of our digital Fast Streamers and Apprentices will work with the young people throughout the week, supporting them with their ideas, analysis and market research - great learning and development opportunity for our digital trainees.
I love what this digital partnership is doing to make a real difference to young people's lives and look forward to seeing what they come up with in May. And reprising my role as ‘dragon’ of course.
