Calling User Researchers to join our team

We’ve just advertised 16 User Research roles across a range of experience levels, so here one HMRC digital User Researcher talks about why he thinks it’s a great job.

Hi, I’m Chris, a User Researcher in HMRC’s Digital Delivery Centre Newcastle. I’m passionate about what I do so I'm delighted to have the chance to share a bit about my role and what it’s like to work on some of the largest digital transformation projects anywhere in government.

Chris Moffit, User Researcher

I’m currently doing research on HMRC’s Making Tax Digital for Individuals programme, working on services that allow users to access and view information relevant to them, and tell us when their circumstances change.

My main goal is to act as the ‘voice’ of the user and to put myself into their shoes. The services I work on can be heavily relied upon by thousands of people to help them manage their tax affairs, so it’s really important we design something that provides a positive experience and allows users to succeed first time.

Going out and speaking to people who will actually use the service, either in their home environment or in one of our usability labs, helps me build a more detailed picture of users and understand their different needs. After all, if we don’t know enough about the people we’re designing for, how can we know what they want or need? As a researcher I’m always encouraged to explore new ways to test services and trial different methods to gain (insights/feedback) from our customers.

Working as a team

One of the best bits about my job is working in a team. I work collaboratively with designers, developers, business analysts and other team members within agile scrum teams to improve the product. Working with experts in their professions who are as passionate about their work as you, makes the Digital Design Centre a fun and exciting place to be.

Having said all that, the most rewarding aspect, and my key motivation, is knowing that my research has made the lives of thousands of people that bit easier.

If all of this sounds like something that would interest you, then we’re recruiting for Senior User Researchers, User Researchers and Assistant Researchers to work in our Digital Centres across the country right now.

Why not come and join us? I can’t imagine there are many more exciting places to work in digital right now.
