Do you have the skills and enthusiasm to be part of the biggest digital transformation in government? Scrum Master Ben Lovatt talks about life at the cutting edge.
I’m Ben. I joined HMRC in 2014 to work in the new Digital Delivery Centre in Newcastle. And I’m really glad I did.
I had a good career with software companies in the private sector. Like most people, I thought government would be tedious, full of red tape and very behind the times. But it couldn’t be more different - it’s fast-moving, dynamic and never dull.
No conventional desks here. It’s all open-plan with break-out areas, sofas, desks built for two, whiteboards and digital screens everywhere. Designed for collaborative and creative working.
In Newcastle we’ve got 20 teams, or scrums. Each one a mix of HMRC and contractors, graduates and apprentices. We’ve got software developers, analysts, testers, researchers and designers all working together.
Within the scrums we move roles a lot, so we get loads of experience. It’s good for career development and was one of the things that attracted me. HMRC really invest in people. In fact we’ve just won Skills Developer of the Year here in the North East.
Every day is different and brings its own challenges. What’s great, though, is knowing that what you’re doing is making a difference to millions of people. Making tax easier and saving taxpayers money at the same time.
Without doubt, this is an exciting time in HMRC Digital. It’s the biggest digital transformation operation in government, handling more than a billion online transactions a year. We’re working with the very latest technologies and on a larger scale than most other UK organisations. And the fact that HMRC is really committed to training and development all adds up to a great place to be right now.
If you’re interested in working in one of the HMRC digital delivery centres we’re looking for talented people to join us. To find out more about our current vacancies, just follow the links below
